Reported Aston Villa target may leave Gerrard high and dry following contract update

Luis Suarez, a reported target of Aston Villa, may leave the side high and dry as he is expected to sign a new deal with Atletico Madrid, per a report.

The Villans were supposedly hoping to complete the major coup of bringing Suarez to Villa Park in January. Indeed, boss Steven Gerrard apparently sought a reunion with the Uruguayan striker.

The loan signing of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona was a driving factor in speculation.

Of course, the trio of Gerrard, Coutinho and Suarez played together at Liverpool. However, Villa may be left without their target should they go in for him again, following an update.

The Birmingham Mail references reports that Atletico are looking to extend Suarez’s stay in Madrid. The Uruguayan is out of contract at the end of the season, hence speculation of him moving on.

However, Atletico reportedly want to extend that deal by an extra two years.

Suarez is still performing to a high standard at Wanda Metropolitano. Indeed, he has contributed to 12 goals in 24 La Liga games this season.

As such, Atletico’s reluctance to let him go makes a lot of sense.

Should they tie him down to the extra two years, speculation on a move to Aston Villa or elsewhere would be put to a stop.

However, there has been no concrete evidence that he will sign a new deal as yet.

Suarez and Gomez among Gerrard targets

Joe Gomez is also a reported summer target of Gerrard’s at Villa. A deal for the Liverpool centre-back is one that Jurgen Klopp is being tipped to accept.

The 24-year-old has started just one league game for the Reds in 15 months.

As such, they may be willing to accept a bid in the region of £30million.

Gerrard was interested in Gomez in the January window, so a summer coup would be more than welcome.
