Scales tipped in Man Utd favour as pundit finds caveat in Harry Kane transfer

Danny Murphy believes that Harry Kane could be tempted to move to Manchester United by the prospect of being the final piece in their jigsaw.

The Red Devils have shown signs of progress this season by finishing second in the Premier League and reaching the Europa League final. However, the defeat to Villarreal has raised the question of whether they currently have enough to win silverware. As such, with the summer approaching, new signings are on the cards.

Reports claim that Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho is once again United’s top target.

However, Kane’s future at Tottenham has become increasingly uncertain. He has reportedly told Spurs that he wants to leave, while staying in the Premier League.

Given his value, United, Manchester City and Chelsea are the only three teams likely to be able to afford him.

While Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will do all he can to keep Kane, though, Murphy reckons that will be “impossible”.

“Harry Kane will be in demand from both of Saturday night’s Champions League finalists and I think it will be impossible for Tottenham to keep him,” the pundit wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“That does not mean chairman Daniel Levy will not fight hard to get a big transfer fee and it may be the end of the window before everything is worked out, but whenever it happens, I believe ultimately a deal will be done.”

As for his potential next destination, United, Chelsea and City would all have their obvious reasons for wanting Kane.

However, the motivation from Kane for joining each club could differ; Stan Collymore reckons Chelsea’s Champions League triumph will allow them to convince their targets.

City, meanwhile, have a wealth of talent already at their disposal.

But while he has hinted at a link-up with Kevin de Bruyne at the Etihad Stadium, Murphy reckons Kane’s potential desire to form a “legacy” at Old Trafford could tip the scales in United’s favour.

Man Utd could get Kane transfer

“The only caveat is if Kane’s motivation went beyond silverware,” the pundit added. “Virgil van Dijk chose Liverpool above City. He understood by helping them win a title, he would become a legend.

“Likewise, if Kane wins the league at City, or collects cups with Chelsea, it would not be because of him. But if he is the final piece in the jigsaw at Manchester United and they become champions for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson, he would have created a legacy.

“As for City and Chelsea, it was significant that neither side started a natural centre forward in Champions League final. Gabriel Jesus, Sergio Aguero and Olivier Giroud were on the bench. And Tammy Abraham was left out altogether.

“It showed why those clubs would view Kane as a huge upgrade. It is up to Kane of course to decide his priorities. But Spurs will have to be realistic and let him leave the nest.”
