Serious Everton repercussions in store as report reveals concerning relegation impact

Everton would likely have to keep paying players their Premier League salaries even if they are relegated to the Championship, reports claim.

It has been a turbulent season at Goodison Park, which began with the controversial appointment of Rafael Benitez. He never could win over the fans with what happened on the pitch and was sacked after 200 days. Frank Lampard came in to replace him.

There has been little sign of an upturn in fortunes under the former Chelsea manager. Most recently, Everton suffered a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

Consequently, Lampard’s men lie just one point and one place above Burnley (who have played a game more). They have 13 games left to salvage their season and avoid the unthinkable.

Only six clubs have been ever-present in the Premier League since its formation in 1992. Everton are one of them, but there are fears that streak could end by the summer.

It would have major repercussions for the club, on and off the pitch. One of the main concerns for any association when changing leagues is the financial aspect.

According to the Daily Mail, this is where Everton could have severe fears. Their sources claim the contracts of the club’s players do not have clauses to reduce their basic salaries in the event of relegation.

Some smaller clubs would have such clauses to protect themselves in case of the drop. In Everton’s case, though, they could keep having to commit to some salaries worth in the region £100,000 per week.

That would not be economical when their revenues will decrease if they do go down. However, the Mail have also been informed that there are some clauses to protect them, even if Everton will not reveal the specifics due to confidentiality.

Everton have many high earners

The Mail speculate that bonuses could be written off, for example. But in terms of their basic salaries, most members of the squad will still receive top-flight terms.

That is, of course, if they even remain at the club. Everton will potentially face an exodus of players if they suffer demotion.

Reports have named Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Jordan Pickford as players who will be in demand, regardless of what league they are in.

The Mail, meanwhile, namecheck Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes as other players among the highest earners in the squad.

There is certainly a great deal of talent among the Everton ranks, making their precarious position all the more concerning. They may require a major rebuild if they become a second-tier club for the first time since the 1950s.
