Sources: Man United holding internal talks over next targets after Liam Delap transfer snub

Manchester United are holding internal discussions over their next move after being beaten to the transfer of Liam Delap by Chelsea.

CaughtOffside understands Man Utd were at various points confident that Delap would choose a move to Old Trafford over Stamford Bridge, but their lack of European football appears to have cost them dearly.

Delap is now set for a medical with Chelsea in the coming days, though CaughtOffside have been told that the Red Devils have long had other alternatives in mind as well.

No final decision has been made yet on who United should prioritise next, but we can reveal a list of names under consideration by club officials.

Who could Manchester United sign after missing out on Liam Delap?

CaughtOffside understands United are now likely to assess and discuss names such as Victor Osimhen, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Jonathan David, and Randal Kolo Muani.

The club also have a long-standing interest in Benjamin Sesko, though the feeling in the industry now is that Arsenal are advancing in talks to sign the RB Leipzig striker after doing a lot of work on the deal over a year ago.

Ruben Amorim also likes Viktor Gyokeres from his former club Sporting Lisbon, but he’s another who’s likely to prioritise European football when he chooses his next club.

Manchester United facing financial limitations in this summer’s transfer market

It also needs to be stressed that United have to be careful this summer due to needing to sell before they can buy.

That could complicate a move for someone like Victor Osimhen, who would have both a high asking price and high salary demands.

David is a free agent as he prepares to leave Lille, but he’s widely felt to be advancing in talks to join Napoli.

If United are to be able to afford the top striker they so urgently need, it will likely mean departures for Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Hojlund, and perhaps even Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo.

CaughtOffside have also previously reported that Joshua Zirkzee could leave United after just one year at the club if the right offer comes in.

Was Liam Delap right to choose Chelsea over Man United?

As Fabrizio Romano recently reported for CaughtOffside, Delap did hold talks with both Chelsea and United before ultimately choosing to move to west London.

The 22-year-old, formerly of Manchester City, was understood to be tempted by United due to a desire to remain in that part of the country, though this was never a deal-breaker for him.

In the end, MUFC’s defeat in the Europa League final swung things massively in Chelsea’s favour, with the Blues back in the Champions League for next season.

CFC also have several figures at the club with key connections to Delap from his Man City days, including former teammates Cole Palmer and Romeo Lavia.
