Southampton takeover nears as £100million Serbian investment brings transfer hope
A Southampton takeover looks to be closing in with a £100million buy-out potentially leading to huge solid investment in the side.
Saints have been under the majority ownership of Chinese businessman Gao Jisheng for four years. However, an announcement of that period ending is expected to be imminent.
A group, which includes Serbian investor Dragan Solak, is expected to take over the club. They will reportedly invest a stake of £100million, per the Daily Telegraph.
Investment in the Saints team has been scarce since Gao acquired the club in 2017.
That lack of investment led to the side struggling for the past four seasons. Indeed, Saints have failed to finish in the top half of the table since the 2016/17 season.
Danny Ings, Virgil van Dijk and Dusan Tadic are all key players that have left the club during that period. What’s more, Southampton have one of the lowest record transfer fees in the Premier League, paying £22.59million for Ings in 2019.
However, with new ownership of the club, they should be able to invest in the side.
Indeed, Solak is chairman of the United Group, a company with an annual revenue of €1.8billion. Southampton will be in a good position should they receive ample investment from Solak.
Former Brentford director of football Rasmus Ankersen is set to become a director at Southampton.
Indeed, it seems Saints are finally going in the right direction.
Southampton takeover may not halt star’s exit
Despite reported investment in the Saints, they may still lose a recent signing soon.
Lyanco was signed as a replacement for Jannik Vestergaard, as the Dane moved to Leicester City in the summer.
However, Lyanco is reportedly on the shortlist of Sporting Lisbon.
The side are said to be tracking the defender, and may move, should his fortunes at Southampton not impove.
