Steve McManaman tells Liverpool the one ‘superstar’ they should sign, despite transfer barrier
Steve McManaman thinks Liverpool should complete the signing of French ‘superstar’ Kylian Mbappe, although the pundit also spoke about a potential transfer barrier.
Mbappe has been dangerous in front of goal once again this term. He has found the net 25 times in 35 appearances so far, as well as contributing 17 assists for his team-mates. The Paris Saint-Germain ace also got on the scoresheet in Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid.
He put PSG 2-0 up on aggregate in the 39th minute by catching Real on the break before firing past Thibaut Courtois.
However, it was not to be for the French giants as Karim Benzema hit a hat-trick in the second half to send Los Blancos through to the quarter-finals.
PSG are hoping to keep hold of Mbappe, but all signs point to a summer transfer. His contract expires in June, meaning he is now free to speak with potential suitors.
Real are the frontrunners to snap him up, but McManaman wants Liverpool to win the transfer race. However, the pundit also revealed a potential stumbling block for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
“If I could sign anybody [for Liverpool] I would sign Mbappe,” McManaman said (via Empire of the Kop). “Even though he’s going to cost too much.
Kylian Mbappe lauded
“I thought he was brilliant at Monaco and then he went to Paris and has been great. Cristiano [Ronaldo] and [Lionel] Messi are coming to the end and Mbappe has been the one who has been standing up this year. He’s the real superstar.”
McManaman then spoke about a striker alternative for Liverpool: “Then it’d be somebody like Erling Haaland – a centre-forward who would score you a load of goals.
“But with this money and how much you would want, it just sets the dressing room on fire. For everyone else, you’d have to pay them.
“If you look at Liverpool’s setup at the minute, if they needed strengthening it would be with a different type of midfielder to what they have now.
“It would probably be one of the big hitters if they could afford it.”

Timely midfielder update
McManaman’s request for a new midfielder could be listened to following an update on Liverpool target Ryan Gravenberch.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the starlet is ‘open’ to leaving Ajax this summer. With his contract up in 2023, the Dutch outfit will have to sell at some point soon.
However, Liverpool must act fast to get their man. Romano claims Bayern chief Oliver Kahn has been in contact with Gravenberch’s agent over a transfer to Germany.
Nothing is advanced with Ajax yet though, meaning Liverpool’s transfer hopes are still alive. The Reds would need to pay €30million (£25m) to secure a deal.
