Summer pursuit revealed as club looks to pounce on wantaway Man Utd star

Boca Juniors chief Jorge Bermudez has confirmed that the Argentine giants tried to sign Edinson Cavani from Man Utd this summer.

The striker moved to Old Trafford in October last year on a free transfer. He had allowed his contract with Paris Saint-Germain to run down as he hunted for a new challenge.

The Uruguay international adapted quickly to life in the Premier League. He managed ten goals in 26 appearances, despite suffering from multiple injuries.

Cavani saved his best form for the Europa League. Five goals in three games sent the Red Devils on their way to the final in Gdansk, Poland.

He scored again on that night but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men lost on penalties to Villarreal. He then fell down the pecking order due to Cristiano Ronaldo’s incredible return.

Cavani is rumoured to want out so he can lead the forward line elsewhere. Boca Juniors are ready and waiting to pounce.

During a recent interview with ESPN Argentina (via Sport Witness), Bermudez confirmed that discussions had been held with the player.

Boca’s vice-president Juan Roman Riquelme was involved. “I remember our vice-president’s conversation with Cavani,” Bermudez said. “Do you know how he wanted to convince him? ‘Come and feel what it’s like to score a goal at the Bombonera’ [Boca’s stadium].”

Boca are not the only team to be monitoring his situation. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is a fan of the veteran’s talent. He wants the club to sign Cavani on loan during the January transfer window.

Such a move would see the player link up with Karim Benzema in attack, which is a scary proposition.

Cavani’s current deal with Man Utd expires in June 2022. It is unclear whether fresh terms will be offered over the next few months.

Man Utd target rejects new Leicester contract

Leicester City playmaker Youri Tielemans has rejected the offer of a new contract, as per 90Min.

Man Utd, Liverpool, Real and Atletico all want the Belgium ace. He is ‘not in the right place’ to agree an extension, 90Min state.

Leicester are desperate to tie the 24-year-old down as they are aware of growing interest in his services. But it looks like they will need to compete for the Premier League title regularly to do that.

Tielemans joined the Foxes in January 2019 on an initial loan deal. He was brought in permanently for a then club-record £40million.

The midfielder’s price tag has almost doubled since then, thanks to his heroics in the Prem and FA Cup final.
