Ten Hag claim branded ‘nonsense’ as prominent journalist delivers telling update on Man Utd pursuit
Man Utd appear to have a clear path to appointing Erik ten Hag as their next manager after a prominent journalist dismissed a worrying claim.
United’s hunt for a new manager has seemingly led them to Amsterdam. Ajax boss Ten Hag, 52, has been earmarked as the man to revitalise the Red Devils. The managerial position will become vacant once Ralf Rangnick moves into a consultancy role at season’s end.
ESPN explained why Ten Hag became the favoured choice among United’s hierarchy ahead of Mauricio Pochettino.
However, the Daily Mail later detailed why Ten Hag’s arrival could spell trouble for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Regardless, Ten Hag remains in the Ajax dugout for the time being and a recent concerning report from the Netherlands had cast doubt on United’s pursuit.
It was claimed the manager had been the recipient of an enticing offer from RB Leipzig.
The German side reportedly saw Ten Hag as the perfect candidate to help them bridge the gap to Dortmund and Bayern. What’s more, the fact they may have Champions League football to offer and United might not could’ve aided their cause.
However, according to chief Sport1 reporter Patrik Berger, talk of Leipzig hijacking United’s move is ‘absolute nonsense’.
Ten Hag situation cleared up
The journalist dismissed that particular claim, though did acknowledge Leipzig have targeted Ten Hag in the past.
Yet at present, the German side are ‘totally satisfied’ with current manager Domenico Tedesco. As such, Berger concluded Ten Hag is ‘still the top candidate to take over’ at Manchester United.
United do appear to be going full bore for the Dutchman – something that has worried club legend Gary Neville.
“It all feels like it’s eggs in one basket with ten Hag,” Neville said on Sky Sports. “If they can’t get him over the line, what a position for Manchester United to be in.
“And if you’re Ralf Rangnick reporting in to ten Hag and answering him honestly, which I suspect he will be, and if you’re [Donny] van de Beek answering him honestly, which I suspect he will be, and we know Edwin van der Sar is over there [at Ajax] who will be speaking to ten Hag honestly.
“They’ll be saying, ‘be very careful, be very careful about going to Manchester United’. Because it can be a graveyard at this moment in time for reputations.”
