In the summer of 1996, it was all change at Barcelona.
The Catalan club had lost the services of club legend Johan Cruyff after eight years in charge. Highly regarded English manager Bobby Robson was the new man in the managerial hot seat, and he brought with him a Brazilian teenage sensation: Ronaldo Nazario.
At just 19, Ronaldo made the £20million fee paid to secure his signature from PSV Eindhoven look like peanuts. In his short stay in Catalonia, the forward registered 47 goals in just 49 appearances.
He was Barcelona’s superstar – the main player who ensured Barca remained successful in what many predicted would be a tough transitional period following Cruyff’s departure. But how did Barcelona’s other 1996 signings fare?
