‘They’ve been doing it for 20 years’; Carragher backs up Chelsea stance with damning evidence
Jamie Carragher has defended his belief that Manchester United should target Thomas Tuchel in the summer while hitting out at hypocritical Chelsea fans.
The current turmoil at Chelsea means the club’s future is uncertain. Tuchel has done a superb job since arriving at Stamford Bridge. But even the German tactician cannot possibly predict what might happen.
United will be in the market for a new manager at the end of the campaign. Ralf Rangnick is in temporary control but will relinquish his duties in the summer.
Mauricio Pochettino is said to be high on the Red Devils wish-list. But Carragher feels Tuchel would be a better fit at Old Trafford.
And he suggested over the weekend that United should take advantage of the Stamford Bridge situation to snare the former Borussia Dortmund chief.
He was bombarded with criticism on social media from irate Chelsea fans. But, speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, the ex-Liverpool defender was unrepentant.
And he feels the Old Trafford outfit would be doing nothing different to the way the west Londoners have operated.
“The Chelsea fans are very passionate about their club and at this moment feel like the world is attacking them, and they are defending their club,” he said.
“I totally get that. But l wouldn’t change my opinion on it.
“And the reason l think it’s a little bit hypocritical of Chelsea supporters is because if teams – such as Manchester United with the manager, or other clubs with the players – are going to take advantage of the situation that Chelsea are in right now, Chelsea have been doing that for 20 years.
“That was the big thing of Roman Abramovich coming – ‘we can throw our money about and get who we want’.”
Carragher doubles down on Chelsea tirade
Chelsea have been one of the most successful English clubs of recent times. They have spent vast sums on players, but Carragher has issues with the way they have gone about their business.
He added: “The first thing they did was go to Manchester United and take Peter Kenyon as their CEO. ‘We’ll go to Liverpool and take the best midfielder in Europe (Steven Gerrard) and destabilise that club for two summers’ – they didn’t get him.
‘We’ll get Ashley Cole, an Invincible who has won everything at Arsenal. Yeah, we’ll go and get him. We get caught tapping up? Doesn’t matter, we’ll pay the fine’.
“Chelsea have taken advantage of every other club in the last 20 years because of Roman Abramovich.”
Carragher has some sympathy for Chelsea
Chelsea is currently up for sale but it will take time for any potential deal to be completed. In the meantime, they have to contend with sanctions imposed on the current owner.
Carragher hopes the club recovers but is steadfast in his belief that hypocrisy is rife among the Blues faithful.
“Some of the things we’ve seen at Chelsea, such as closing the club shop and stopping kids from getting Mason Mount on the back of their shirts, I don’t agree with that and I certainly don’t want Chelsea to go to the wall,” he continued.
“But, if that’s my opinion of it, I certainly don’t want Chelsea fans questioning that opinion next time I go there because it’s exactly what they have done for the last 20 years.”
