Tielemans perceives contract misconception, as Leicester star sets timeframe for transfer decision

Youri Tielemans has denied that any desire of his to leave Leicester City is absolute, instead vowing to make a decision over his future in the summer.

Tielemans is very much a player in demand as his contract approaches its final 12 months. He was a statement signing for the club back in 2019 and has justified their decision to bring him to the Premier League. The Belgium international looks capable of taking a step up in his career.

That may lead him away from Leicester, who therefore may be wise to cash in this summer while they still can. Tielemans has been linked with big – and rich – clubs like Manchester City or Real Madrid.

For now, though, he remains committed to the Foxes. He has already spoken glowingly of his current club, despite reports that they are preparing for a future without him.

Tielemans has now reiterated how he is open to staying with Leicester for another season, until the end of his contract. However, he does find the transfer rumours connected with his name fascinating.

He told Het Belang van Limburg: “I try not to think about it much and focus on my own performance, it works well.

“But it’s actually amazing how much they talk about my future. Every day they name a different club.

“I have the feeling that people think that after this season I will be out of contract, when I still have one year left. I feel good here, I like living here. My children go to school here.

“I am happy both outside and inside football. And Leicester have ambition…”

Of his upcoming summer decision, Tielemans added: “I am very calm about that. My contract expires in 2023 and it’s not that I absolutely want to leave.

“I haven’t made my decision yet. If I have to stay another year, I will gladly do so.

“The club has been really great towards me. They remain very professional, just like me. That will not change.”

Tielemans not ‘ignoring’ Leicester

The 24-year-old then denied reports he had rejected the most recent contract offer put on the table by Leicester.

Shrugging, he replied: “There are talks between the club and my Let’s Play advisors. That will remain so. It’s not that I’m ignoring the club.

“I will study my options in the summer and make a decision. My family is the most important to me. I’m not going somewhere where I know my family isn’t happy.

“As a father of two children, you have to think about that too.”

Tielemans has made 142 appearances across his Leicester career. From those games, the former Anderlecht and Monaco man has scored 24 goals and provided 22 assists.

He has been linked with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Juventus, as well as the aforementioned Man City and Real Madrid. Whether any can take him this summer or they have to wait a year remains to be seen.
