Tottenham announce deal to sign star second to Messi in impressive stat

Tottenham have confirmed the signing of winger Bryan Gil from Sevilla in a transfer that sees Erik Lamela joining the Spanish outfit as a makeweight.

Gil, 20, has agreed a contract until 2026 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. While his move has gone through as undisclosed, reports last week stated Tottenham will pay €25m plus Lamela for the signing of Gil.

He will link up with his new team-mates at the conclusion of the Olympics in Tokyo, where he is representing Spain.

The midfielder also was part of the Spain squad at the 2020 European Championships.

Gil will prove a big part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans going forwards at Spurs. With the Portuguese liking to operate a 3-5-2 system, Gil will be seen as something of a ball-carrying winger. Indeed, to that end, Spurs have gotten hold out one of the best in that department.

He made a total of 66 ball carries with a take-on in LaLiga last season, second only to Lionel Messi.

Indeed, his role at Tottenham will be similar to that which Pedro Neto did under Nuno at Wolves.

Meanwhile, the move brings an end to Lamela’s eight-year stint at Spurs.

The 29-year-old Argentinian joined from Roma in August 2013 and made 257 appearances in all competitions.

Spurs said on their official website: “A club man through and through, we wish Erik all the best for the future.”

Tottenham step up interest in Argentine forward

Another attacker on Tottenham’s radar – and one with more experience – is Joaquin Correa.

The Argentina international looks likely to leave Lazio this summer. Rome-based paper Corriere Dello Sport now claims Arsenal and Tottenham are ready to bid for him.

Both Arsenal and Spurs are looking to strengthen up front. The Gunners are still looking for a suitor for Alexandre Lacazette, while Harry Kane wants out of Tottenham.

Correa certainly caught the eye last season when he notched eight goals and added three assists in Serie A.

Also a former Sevilla player, he is now under consideration for both north London rivals.
