Tottenham flop ‘keen’ on early exit as Spanish giant plot cheeky, loss-making raid

Tottenham could be handed a quick chance to shift out the struggling Emerson Royal, though a move would likely come at a loss, per a report.

Spurs signed the 23-year-old Brazilian from Barcelona last summer. The right-back set Tottenham back £25.8m, but his early showings in north London have suggested Barca got the better end of that deal.

Indeed, Emerson Royal has struggled to influence proceedings at both ends of the pitch while deployed as a wing-back. He has just one assist and no goals to his name from 33 appearances across all competitions. Furthermore, his defending has left a lot to be desired.

As such, the Sun recently reported Tottenham could look to cut their losses and move Emerson out after just one season.

That would leave just Matt Doherty as Antonio Conte’s sole option at right-wing-back. As such, a new face would likely be targeted in the summer, and impressive Nottingham Forest loanee Djed Spence has been touted.

But any new signing will likely hinge on Emerson first being moved on. And according to the latest from the Sun, a return to Spain could be on the cards.

Atletico plotting cut-price Emerson Royal raid

The newspaper state Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid are mulling a move – if the price is right.

Atletico did not sign a long-term replacement for Kieran Trippier when the Englishman departed for Newcastle in January.

Diogo Dalot has been mentioned with filling the void, but the Portuguese looks increasingly likely to pen fresh terms at Old Trafford.

Emerson could therefore be the answer, though Atletico won’t pay what Spurs did.

It’s claimed Atletico would only bid as high as £20m. That would represent roughly a £6m loss for a player who hasn’t fulfilled his potential in England as yet.

From the player’s end, Emerson is described as ‘keen’ to return to Spain if he’s no longer fancied by Spurs. And given Doherty has started the last two league games and notched a goal and three assists, it appears Emerson’s chance has been and gone.

Two Tottenham stars to bait Southampton deal?

Meanwhile, Tottenham could offer Southampton their pick of two stars if it helps ease through a transfer for impressive right-back Valentino Livramento, per a report.

Southampton signed Livramento from Chelsea last summer in a deal worth a reported £5.3m. And despite being 18 when the campaign began, Livramento wasted little time establishing himself as first choice under Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Chelsea could re-sign the right-back after inserting a buy-back clause into his deal. Per the Sun, that figure is reportedly set at £38m, though does not activate until the end of the 2022/23 season. However, the latest news regarding sanctions levied at the Blues has put their future transfer plans in serious doubt.

Football Insider also touted Tottenham as an interested party with the future of Emerson Royal in doubt.

Now,  the latest from Football Insider puts Livramento in the frame. What’s more, according to their Spurs specialist John Wenham, Spurs could give Southampton their pick of two players to help ease a deal through.

“I’m looking at ways Tottenham could offset some of the fee Southampton will ask for,” said Wenham.

“Could we include Harry Winks in the deal? There are other players who fit that bill. Various outlets are reporting Cameron Carter-Vickers is of interest to some clubs owing to his form at Celtic.

“Is there a way we could offer him as a makeweight in the summer? It might work out, giving them a defender as they are losing a defender. Maybe something can be done there.”
