Tottenham join Newcastle in chase for £30m defender who fills pivotal role in Conte system

Tottenham have reportedly joined Newcastle in the growing race to sign Freiburg defender Nico Schlotterbeck, as Antonio Conte hunts a new left-sided centre-back.

Conte is the market for another central defender this summer despite getting a big improvement out of current trio Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies in recent weeks as Spurs have stormed into the top four.

Wales international Davies has done a decent job for Conte in a role where the left-sided defender of the three pushes forward to supplement the midfield and attack more.

However, Conte still wants an upgrade in that position and there are several names in the frame.

In Thursday’s Paper Talk it was stated by The Athletic that RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol was a major option for Spurs.

Now the same source states that Schlotterbeck has also been targeted.Along with Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni and Lille’s Sven Botman.

The Athletic claims that while Bastoni and Gvardiol remain their preferred targets, Schlotterbeck is also under consideration.

However, Tottenham will face rivals in the shape of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund for the 22-year-old.

Newcastle are also said to have offered a huge £40million for Schlotterbeck in January. But the Freiburg star decided to reject the switch to St James’.

One thing that will come as a boost to suitors is that the player’s price should drop by £10m. That is due to the fact that Schlotterbeck’s current contract runs out in the summer of 2023.

The young defender has also proved to be an attacking threat this season. Indeed, he has scored an impressive four goals in 26 Bundesliga games.

Pace and quality on the ball perfect for Conte

The 6ft 3in is renowned for his pace and ability in possession, two things that fit perfectly for Conte.

He is also considered an upgrade on Davies, who scored his first goal in four years against Newcastle recently.

Whilst dropping the Welshman from the side would appear harsh, he also offers great versatility from the bench.

The only potential stumbling block ahead is that Schlotterbeck has previously stated his desire to remain in his homeland and play for one of the giant Bundesliga clubs.

The report finishes by stating that Spurs will only try and sign the player if other targets fall through.
