Tottenham overtake all rivals as €25m bid does the trick for Danish talent

Tottenham are reported to be closing in on the signature of Mikkel Damsgaard amid claims Fabio Paratici has tabled an improved €25m bid for the Denmark winger.

The Sampdoria man has long been on Tottenham’s radar with Jose Mourinho tracking the 21-year-old for some time. However, his dazzling displays at Euro 2020 only appear to have increased that interest, with Paratici now leading the charge.

Damsgaard served notice of his abilities with a series of impressive displays at Euro 2020. Making the most of Christian Eriksen’s near-tragic incident, the winger caught the eye with two goals, including one in the semi-final against England.

That form has seen the likes of Liverpool and Everton linked with his signature. Damsgaard too has also been mentioned as a target for Leeds United.

However, Spurs’ interest has never waned. Now, according to La Repubblica, via Tutto Mercato Web, Tottenham have ‘accelerated’ their efforts to sign Damsgaard.

They claim Spurs have ‘overtaken all rivals’ for the winger, with Sampdoria reportedly sticking a €25m asking price on the Dane.

And that’s a fee, it’s claimed, that Tottenham will have no problem matching with Damsgaard now ‘at the top of their wanted list’.

Sampdoria chairman Massimo Ferrero recently suggested Damsgaard could soon be worth €50m. However, the harsh realities are that Samp need a sale this summer and are willing to accept around half that for their star man.

Tottenham are also closing on the signing of Sevilla winger Bryan Gil, so claims of an approach for Damsgaard do seem unusual.

Director reveals Damsgaard plans

Furthermore, the Serie A side’s sporting director, Carlo Osti, insists they want Damsgaard to stay for another year.

“Everybody saw his qualities at the Euros and we are happy for that,” Osti told Rai Sport.

“However, as the President said, he is not for sale, even though everything has a price. I think he can further improve by staying at Sampdoria for one more season; that’s what we want to do.”

Damsgaard is on a contract with Sampdoria until 2024. However, his profile has never been higher off the back of his Euro 2020 exploits for semi-finalists Denmark.

As such, there’s a feeling in Italy that now could be the best time to cash in on the winger.
