Tottenham past and present duo wanted in ‘big splash’ double swoop

Club Brugge want to go all out this summer to perform a double transfer swoop involving Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, a report claims.

The defender has proved one of Tottenham‘s best signings in their recent history after signing in 2015. Since joining from Atletico Madrid, he has racked up 234 appearances and signed a new deal last season. That came soon after Jose Mourinho moved to Spurs, but the landscape has now shifted.

Mourinho got the sack in April and is now at Roma, while Ryan Mason is in temporary charge in north London.

Amid the managerial shake-up, speculation has also arisen about some of Tottenham’s stars – including Alderweireld.

Brugge have had links with the Belgium international of late, while his former club Ajax are also supposedly keen.

According to Voetbal24, though, Brugge remain the club with most interest in the centre-back.

The report says that the club are preparing a ‘big splash’ on the transfer market this summer. As well as Alderweireld, they want to sign his fellow Belgian and former Spurs team-mate Nacer Chadli.

Chadli was at Spurs before his fellow countryman, but the pair worked together before Chadli left in 2016.

The 31-year-old is now at Istanbul Basaksehir and has just over a year left on his contract.

The report adds that while Brugge are ‘dreaming’ of landing the pair, there are no guarantees that they will be able to afford both players, let alone either of them.

Furthermore, Alderweireld reportedly wants to see who Spurs appoint as their new manager before deciding on his future.

But Tottenham have suffered setbacks in their hunt to replace Mourinho; RB Leizpig boss Julian Nagelsmann has agreed to join Bayern Munich, while Erik ten Hag is staying at Ajax.

No Tottenham move for Gerrard

In addition, one pundit has insisted that Steven Gerrard will not be moving away from Rangers any time soon.

The ex-Liverpool star lifted the Scottish Premiership title on Saturday and is already looking forward to next season.

As such, Peter Crouch reckons that Spurs will have to look elsewhere.
