Tottenham still in play for dynamic midfielder high on Mourinho wishlist

Tottenham are still reportedly in the hunt to sign a midfielder who was firmly on Jose Mourinho’s radar before his exit.

The Portuguese was axed in April after 17 months in charge of the north London club, but was still plotting his summer transfer business before his high-profile exit. And one of the players on his wishlist was RB Leipzig star Marcel Sabitzer.

The Austria international has scored 10 goals in 45 appearances for club and country this season. He will also be in action at the delayed Euros over the next six weeks.

Mourinho, however, could still present a problem to Spurs in their chase for the player. Indeed, reports from Italy claim that the new Roma boss wants the player to join him in Italy.

Gazzetta dello Sport (as cited by Sport Witness) claims that Sabitzer could well be on the move this summer. That is mainly down to the fact that Leipzig have signed Mohamed Simakan, Brian Brobbey and Josko Gvardiol and need to balance the books.

In that case, the 27-year-old could be sacrificed, which would lead to a potential scramble for his signature.

The report adds that Tottenham ‘remain at the window’ and are a ‘dangerous competitor’ for Roma.

That will be the case even more if Spurs decide to move on from Tanguy Ndombele. The talented midfielder was a regular under Mourinho this season. However, he found himself back on the bench during Ryan Mason’s temporary reign as boss.

Barcelona have previously been linked with the France international. However, it’s thought that Tottenham will wait to appoint a new manager before making any transfer decisions.

Former boss Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with a shock return to the club. Antonio Conte, Graham Potter and Scott Parker are also in the running, with the former said to have already told Daniel Levy that he wants to bring three Inter Milan stars with him.

Tottenham chasing Bundesliga winger

Meanwhile, Tottenham have reportedly joined Chelsea in the chase to sign Borussia Monchengladbach star Jonas Hofmann this summer.

The 28-year-old winger enjoyed a strong campaign with the Bundesliga outfit, finishing with six goals and adding 11 assists in the league. The attacker’s impressive form also helped him make his international bow for Germany back in October 2020.

And a report from Kicker (as cited by Sport Witness) claims that Hofmann could be on the move this summer.

The report states that clubs from England and Spain are showing an interest in the player, with Spurs in particular ‘vying’ to sign him.

Tottenham scouts are said to have watched Hofmann in action on numerous occasions as they weigh up a potential swoop.

Hofmann has no release clause in his contract which expires in 2023. Given the ‘financial feasibility’ of a transfer, Kicker adds that a Premier League switch ‘would be likely’.

However, Spurs are not the only English club tracking the former Dortmund. Premier League rivals Chelsea have also been monitoring the player, although their north London rivals are reportedly ahead in the race for his signature.
