Transfer plan to snatch Man Utd star emerges with new manager facing immediate big call
The next Man Utd manager could be greeted with a big call to make at right-back after Fiorentina’s plan to sign Diogo Dalot surfaced.
The Portuguese right-back, 23, is once again facing uncertain times in his Old Trafford career. Dalot was retained past the summer after the club’s reported pursuit of Kieran Trippier fell short. Aaron Wan-Bissaka began the season as first-choice at right-back, but poor form saw Dalot given a chance to shine.
Indeed, the Portugal international has been Ralf Rangnick’s preferred pick on the right side of his defence.
He compiled a run of 10 starts in 12 league matches between December and mid-February. However, he was then benched for three of the last four.
Dalot’s current contract with Manchester United is due to expire in the summer of 2023. There are reportedly plans afoot to table an extension, though whether it’ll be signed could depend on guarantees about his playing time.
That is a decision that likely won’t be made until United have a new permanent manager installed.
Erik Ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are generating the strongest links. Ten Hag was interviewed by the Red Devils last Monday, while Pochettino has been in contact with club chief Richard Arnold.
Regardless of who gets the nod, a report from the Italian press has now claimed the new boss will be faced with a Diogo Dalot dilemma.
Dalot eyed on loan with buy option
Dalot is attracting interest from Serie A side Fiorentina. La Viola currently have Real Madrid loanee Alvaro Odrioziola occupying their right-back berth. However, FirenzeViola.it claim it’s unlikely the Spaniard will join on a permanent deal.
The outlet reports Fiorentina would be on board with another season-long loan stint. Real Madrid aren’t keen on that idea though, instead wanting a permanent sale.
Fiorentina are unable to muster the finances required to pull off a permanent coup, and that’s where Dalot comes in.
It’s stated Dalot is an attractive proposition to Fiorentina given he has previously proved himself in Italy. Dalot spent last season on loan with AC Milan and raised his stock while there.
As such, a loan move with an option to buy set at around €10m is being formulated.
If tabled to United, their new manager would have a decision to make.
Dalot has looked more than capable of cutting it in the Premier League. Though if the new boss favours Wan-Bissaka, Dalot may not wish to stick around anyway.
Alternatively, Dalot could be loaned out in the hopes more regular gametime elsewhere accelerates his development. That could then see him return a superior player with his transfer value upped.
They could then pursue a summer sale to a different team for a far higher sum than the €10m Fiorentina are proposing. Though in that scenario, United would require Dalot to sign a new deal first to prevent him being able to leave for free in 2023.
Ultimately, the final decision will rest with who United select as their next manager.
