Arsenal chiefs have done the background work over a big transfer to bring Eduardo Camavinga to north London, a report claims.
The Gunners are facing a crucial transfer window this summer after a poor season under Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard’s side exited the Europa League at the semi-final stage to hefty criticism, but their Premier League performance has failed to provide much more entertainment in recent months.
Indeed, Arsenal sit ninth in the top flight and are facing the rare prospect of a campaign without European football.
In addition, the Emirates club are facing uncertainty over their ownership; a lot of fans want Stan and Josh Kroenke to leave, while Spotify founder Daniel Ek waits in the wings.
Stan Kroenke has decided to keep Arteta in his job – for now – and, according to Le10 Sport, the owner and his fellow chiefs are planning to help Arsenal get back on track with Camavinga’s star signing.
The report claims that the club ‘stand out’ in the race for the Rennes star; they have shown motivation to land his signature and have conducted transfer efforts ‘behind the scenes’.
Arsenal have also made the French midfielder their top priority this summer.
Camavinga has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting young midfielders. He made his debut in April 2019 – aged only 16 – and has four international Under-21 caps to his name.
This season, he has featured in all but three Ligue 1 games for Rennes, cementing his role as one of the first names on the team sheet.
As for his fee, Le10 Sport claims that it remains unclear how much Arsenal will offer Rennes for their star. However, they will need to submit a bid of at least €50million (£43million).
Camavinga offers transfer update
The midfielder will have one year left on his Rennes contract at the end of the season. As a result, a decision over whether to stay or to go is looming.
But amid further interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, Camavinga insists that his family will play a key role in his decision.
“It makes you feel flattered and it is nice that teams like Real Madrid or Bayern are interested in your situation,” he told Telefoot (via AS).
“I am not going to lie, but I have not yet decided with my family what I will do.”
Arsenal added to their midfield last Autumn, with Thomas Partey arriving from Atletico Madrid.
