Two issues highlighted as Man Utd warned over signing free agent Ramos

Manchester United have been told to swerve the signing of veteran centre back Sergio Ramos on a free transfer this summer.

Real Madrid legend Ramos is available after it was confirmed he will leave the Spanish giants at the end of the month. That will bring an end to a 16-year long association with the club, a period in which he won 22 major trophies.

Inevitably, a whole host of teams are being linked with recruiting the 35-year-old.

That includes PSG, Manchester City and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United. However, Real’s fierce rivals Barcelona and Ramos’ ex-side Sevilla have been ruled out.

It’s the Red Devils who are currently favourites for his signature. In fact, a report from Sunday (20th June) claims the path is now clear for them to make their move.

But while Jose Mourinho believes the defender would make an impact in the Premier League, former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison insists he would be a risky signing for United.

Speaking to ESPN (via the Express) the Scotsman insisted: “It doesn’t seem a fit for me, Ramos at United. I don’t think he’s got the pace anymore. Add him with Maguire and they’re still weak. Lindelof’s quicker.

“You look at Man United on the pitch and there’s no doubting who is the icon and the best player over the past 15 years, obviously Ramos.

“But you pair him with Maguire and you think, ‘That’s a slow centre-half partnership. [But] Raphael Varane, that’s a fit.”

Varane, 28, has also said to be a target at Old Trafford. The Frenchman is out of contract in 12 months and is unlikely to renew with Los Blancos.

United want to take advantage of that by signing him up themselves. And they’re apparently willing to include a big name in a deal to make it happen.

Ramos doesn’t suit progression plan

With Ramos now in the twilight of his career, his next club will get just a few years out of him at most.

And after taking his age and wage demands into consideration too, Hutchison does not believe he’d be a worthwhile signing.

“You see for sure United’s plan going forward. You bring Jadon Sancho in and you’ve got Mason Greenwood on the right-hand side,” he said.

“In a year’s time when Cavani is finished, Greenwood moves to be their number nine. You can see the pathway for Greenwood, after learning from Cavani over 18 months.

“At the back if you bring Ramos in I’m not even sure it’s a short-term fix. I think it will look good but it’ll cost an awful lot of money.

“If he’s wanting two years, are you going to get the very best out of Ramos for two years? I think you get more out of Varane.”
