‘Very special’; Eriksen makes emotional return and issues strong Brentford claim

Christian Eriksen admitted his happiness at retuning to action after his health issues and is confident Brentford will avoid relegation.

The 30-year-old penned a six-month contract with the Bees last month. He had not played since collapsing while playing in Euro 2020 for Denmark against Finland in Copenhagen. There were major doubts over his future after the former Tottenham ace had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator fitted.

But Thomas Frank gave him an opportunity and the midfielder jumped at the chance of joining Brentford He came on as a 52nd-minute substitute as the west Londoners lost 2-0 to Newcastle on home soil.

Both sets of fans gave him a warm round of applause. And the Dane, while frustrated with losing to the Magpies, was delighted to be back on the pitch.

“If you take away the result. I’m one happy man. To go through what I’ve been through, being back is a wonderful feeling,” he told Sky Sports.

“Thomas didn’t say much [when I came on]. I’ve been speaking to him every day for the last few weeks. He just said good luck and enjoy the game.”

And the ex-Inter forward felt his side put on a decent display after an early red card for Josh Dasilva.

“You can never predict the game. I don’t think anyone predicted we’d be down to 10 men so early,” he added. “The guys did what they could. It was a good fight in the end.”

Eriksen issues rallying cry

Brentford are on a dreadful run of results, with just one point earned from their past eight outings. Eriksen hopes to do all he can to replay the faith shown in him by the Bees.

And, which acknowledging that the bottom three is now looming large on the horizon, the ex-Ajax star is adamant they can stay up.

“It’s been very special since day one,” he continued. “[Brentford] have taken good care of me. Everyone’s been really happy about it and everyone’s been really helpful.

“Everyone is here. My family, my parents, my kids, my mother in law and some doctors who have been helping me back and forth. What they’ve been through is even tougher than what I’ve been through.

“I think everyone knows every game is very important. I think everyone’s very focused on staying up. Nobody’s naive, but everyone’s focused on their job. The confidence is definitely there to stay up.”
