Vieira reveals how he knew Eduoard would be able to torment Tottenham
Crystal Palace head coach Patrick Vieira knew debutant Odsonne Edouard would enjoy himself against the 10 men of Tottenham at Selhurst Park.
The French coach subbed on his fellow countryman after 84 minutes of Saturday’s 3-0 win over Tottenham. By that point, Wilfried Zaha had given the hosts the lead against their London rivals. Furthermore, Spurs centre-back Japhet Tanganga had received a second yellow card for a tackle on Jordan Ayew.
Edouard came on, looking to deliver following his move to Palace as the club’s exciting, marquee striker arrival.
It only took him a matter of seconds, netting to mark a dream debut. However, he capped it with a brace deep into stoppage time.
Vieira said: “It is a dream start for him. He came on and there was more space and that allowed him to score those goals.
“For him to come on and score those two goals, it is really good for him. It will give him belief and more confidence to do well for the team.
“I am really happy for him because it will help the team in the future.”
Palace’s win was their first of the season and it was an impressive one against a Tottenham side who had won all of their first three games.
Palace, though, had picked up two draws and a defeat in matches against West Ham, Brentford and Chelsea.
As such, Vieira insisted that his side cannot take the foot of the gas in the search of a run of momentum.
Vieira wants Crystal Palace momentum
“It is important for us to keep calm, keep working and try to improve,” the Frenchman said. “The group of players we have is ready to compete in the Premier League, it is just about how we can be consistent.
“We played well and scored goals, how can we play that well next week?
“It was a really good team performance, we started the game well with energy, we competed well. I am really pleased with the performance we had.
“What we want as a team is to win the game. We played some really good football but we couldn’t win games and we wanted that because it will give us confidence and that was the most important thing.”
