Wantaway Man Utd star to set transfer record as Newcastle gain advantage for summer swoop

Newcastle United have been told the money they must stump up if they want to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson in the summer.

The 25-year-old came through the Red Devils youth setup before making his debut in the 2020-2021 season. The Whitehaven-born star gained vital first-team experience with several loan moves while waiting for his United opportunity. He enjoyed temporary stints with Stockport County, Grimsby Town and Shrewsbury Town before spending two years with Sheffield United.

And it was while he was with the Blades that the talented shot-stopper began to fulfil his potential. He made 46 Championship appearances in 2018-2019 before playing a full Premier League campaign the following season.

It seemed as though he would become United’s number one when returning to Old Trafford and made 13 league appearances in 2020-2021. But a combination of injury and David de Gea’s return to form saw the England international back on the bench.

He is clearly unhappy with the situation and a report earlier this moth suggested Henderson is ‘actively’ seeking a way out of the club. Newcastle have been heavily linked with a move for the keeper.

And a report in The Star claims they will need to fork out £40m if they are to land their target in the off-season. They attempted to take him to St James’ Park in the winter widow.

But the Manchester United hierarchy refused to play ball. The Magpies made no secret of the fact they will return with another bid this summer.

Martin Dubravka is the current custodian for the Tynesiders. However they see Henderson as a upgrade on the Slovakian.

Henderson deal to break British record

Newcastle’s new-found wealth, thanks to the Saudi-backed takeover, means they can now compete with most clubs in the transfer market.

Therefore the price quoted would not be an issue for the north-east outfit. It would make the man with one England cap the most expensive British keeper.

Aaron Ramsdale currently holds that title after Arsenal paid Sheffield United £30m for the 23-year-old. The fact that United have hung such a lofty price tag around Henderson’s neck might work in Newcastle’s favour.

It will price many rivals out of the market, leaving the way clear for Eddie Howe to land his man. The former Carlisle youth player is desperate to showcase his skills in the Premier League.

He has ambitions to play for the Three Lions and would love to be part of Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad for Qatar.
