West Ham still pushing to secure massive striker deal despite facing hurdles
West Ham are considering a second attempt to sign prolific Benfica forward Darwin Nunez, despite multiple hurdles making the pursuit near impossible.
The Hammers are considering whether to make an improved bid for Benfica forward Nunez. The initial fee looked to have been enough, but Benfica then rebuffed the attempt, per Sky Sports.
Nunez has been in stunning form this season. The Uruguayan has scored 15 goals in 16 games in Liga Bwin, and is the league’s top scorer.
The second-most goals in the division have been scored by Luis Diaz, now of Liverpool. Nunez appeared to have been following the Colombian to the Premier League recently.
However, West Ham’s approach was rejected by Benfica after a deal appeared to be in place.
The East London side must now consider an improved bid. However, the logistics mean that a deal would now be tough to pull off.
The limited time left in the window presents an issue. Furthermore, Nunez is on international duty, which creates an additional headache.
Newcastle and Liverpool have flown representatives out to complete the deals for Bruno Guimaraes and Diaz, respectively.
However, with such little time left, it seems an impossible task for West Ham to follow suit.
As such, it seems they will be left without their most desired target in this window.
Nunez unlikely but Hammers could snatch Origi
The need for a second striker at West Ham remains should they be unable to land Nunez. With that deal looking unlikely, the Hammers will likely look elsewhere.
Divock Origi has been linked with the club for some time, and he may finally move.
With his role at Liverpool being benchwarmer, he would likely relish the challenge of battling Michail Antonio for the Hammers’ No.9 spot.
The pieces look to be falling into place for West Ham to complete the deal.
