Wright-Phillips reveals how Marsch will change Leeds when detailing Bielsa parallels
Former Premier League star Shaun Wright-Phillips hints at what Leeds United are getting, detailing parallels between Jesse Marsch and Marcelo Bielsa.
American manager Marsch was revealed as Leeds’ new manager this week. He has big shoes to fill following in the footsteps of fan-favourite Bielsa.
Bielsa took Leeds back to the Premier League following a 16-year absence. Furthermore, he managed to inspire them to a ninth-place finish on their return to the top flight.
As such, his departure following a string of poor results will be tough for fans to take.
However, Wright-Phillips, who played under new manager Marsch at New York Red Bulls between 2015-16, has given fans hope for the new man.
“I think he’s a good fit for Leeds in general because his press is pretty similar in a way to Bielsa’s,” he said on The Monday Night Club Podcast.
Indeed, the pressing tactics were part of what made the Whites so exciting to watch under Bielsa. Furthermore, Wright-Phillips suggested the wide open spaces Bielsa’s system left will be a thing of the past.
“He just doesn’t allow his players to end up vacating certain areas of the pitch and leaving big gaps, which in the Premier League with the quality that’s there can be exploited,” Wright-Phillips added.
“He has a philosophy that Leeds fans can get behind. Everything with him is similar to Bielsa, he doesn’t want anything but hard work.”
Leeds fans will surely get behind Marsch if his football is exciting as Bielsa’s.
Marsch could inspire big summer snare
With Marsch now at the helm, Leeds may be in a more favourable position to land a major target of theirs. Brenden Aaronson could be keen on making the switch to Leeds now.
Aaronson played under Marsch for six months while the American was in charge at RB Salzburg.
As such, the club may be more likely to sell to Leeds now, and Aaronson could be tempted by a reunion.
That signing would be a big one for Leeds given their determination to land the star in the winter window.
