Chelsea change to familiar transfer track for ideal addition subject of past €40m move

Chelsea have reignited their interest in Juventus wing-back Alex Sandro to cover for their injury crisis, according to reports in Italy.

With Ben Chilwell ruled out long-term due to an ACL injury, Chelsea are short of depth at left-back. Marcos Alonso is their only recognised option there as they struggle to recall Emerson Palmieri from a loan with Lyon.

One man they have been able to bring back into the fold is Kenedy. But he would not seem to be part of their long-term plans.

Therefore, the Blues could be on the lookout for new targets to provide competition for Alonso, who himself has been linked with an exit.

A plethora of names have been linked, but the latest is someone who has been a rumoured target for a long time.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Chelsea’s interest in Juventus’ Alex Sandro remains. The report reminds that the Premier League side offered around €40m for the Brazilian a few years ago.

Now, he is back on their agenda, and having just turned 31 years old isn’t likely to cost as much as he did then. Besides, he is only under contract in Turin until 2023.

In the meantime, Chelsea are said to have made an enquiry about his availability.

Sandro has started 12 of the 19 Serie A games he has played in so far this season. He is yet to contribute a goal or assist, but did score once in the Champions League group stage.

Across his Juve career, Sandro has played 259 games, scored 14 goals and assisted 30 more.

Alex Sandro emerges as Chelsea alternative

The update comes after another of Chelsea’s left-back targets reportedly revealed a preference to move elsewhere.

Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico has reportedly told club chiefs that he wants to secure a dream move to Catalan giants Barcelona.

The LaLiga outfit want more competition for Jordi Alba on the left side of the defence. To that end, Tagliafico has emerged as a top candidate, particularly because he comes fairly cheap.

According to ESPN, the Argentina international has told Ajax that his heart is set on Barcelona.

With that being the case, a proposed switch to Stamford Bridge for the 29-year-old now looks a non-starter.

Thomas Tuchel has been eyeing up Tagliafico to cover for Chilwell’s absence.

Tagliafico also comes cheap at around £6million. However, the report adds that Barca want an initial loan with a purchase option in the summer.
