‘He’s now spot on’; Redknapp reveals biggest reason behind dismal Kane start at Tottenham

Jamie Redknapp feels last summer’s transfer saga was a huge factor in the poor early-season form of Harry Kane whose game is now ‘spot on’.

Kane scored his 49th England goal as Gareth Southgate’s side beat Switzerland 2-1 at Wembley on Saturday. It brought the Tottenham striker level with Sir Bobby Charlton’s tally. The 28-year-old has enjoyed a stunning few weeks, scoring many goals for Spurs, including a brace in victory over Manchester City.

It is all a far cry from the first few months of 2021-2022. The Walthamstow-born ace could not buy a Premier League goal for the north Londoners and looked a shadow of his former self.

He was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City during the summer of 2021. And the prolific marksman even went as far as revealing in an interview that he was keen on a new challenge.

However, he remained at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after City failed to match Daniel Levy’s asking price. Kane was unable to lift himself out of the doldrums and cut a disconsolate figure while out on the pitch.

But that has now all changed and he has bagged 22 goals in all competitions for Antonio Conte’s side. He is also just shy of a half century of England goals and Redknapp feels his slow start to the campaign was understandable.

“Harry’s had a tough Euros, but the Man City element didn’t help, coming into it with that on the back of his mind,” he told Sky Sports.

“Once the season started that affected him. I think now he’s in the form of his life, everything about his game is spot on.”

Lineker praise for Kane achievements

Kane’s next personal target is to become England’s all-time leading scorer. That accolade is currently held by Wayne Rooney, who notched 53 in a distinguished international career.

It is inevitable that Kane, fitness permitting, will move above the former Manchester United star’s tally. The Spurs hotshot has now moved beyond Gary Linker’s total of 48 that he had matched since scoring four against San Marino in November.

But, far from being disappointed, the Match of the Day presenter took to Twitter to offer his congratulations.

“Was nice having you for company, @HKane,” he tweeted. “Never thought it would last, but it was fun for a while.”
