Former Tottenham, Newcastle target reveals fresh plan to shake up Premier League – ‘I think it will happen’
Paulo Fonseca has revealed plans to have another go at trying to manage in the Premier League following Tottenham and Newcastle interest.
The 49-year-old has spent most of his managerial career in his native Portugal. While there, he coached the likes of Porto, Braga and Pacos de Ferreira. However, his stock rose further when he guided Shakhtar Donetsk to six major titles in the league and cup in three years.
As such, Roma became the first club he took charge of in one of Europe’s five major leagues.
Fonseca moved to Italy in 2019 and while Roma failed to finish higher than fifth in the league under his management, he did enough to earn interviews for a move to the Premier League.
Still, he rejected Tottenham after talks with club chiefs. While chairman Daniel Levy was on board with the Portuguese’s ideas, director of football Fabio Paratici disagreed and the move fell through.
In November, meanwhile, Fonseca also impressed in an interview with Newcastle. However, club chief Amanda Staveley turned her attention to Unai Emery and ultimately Eddie Howe.
Nevertheless, Fonseca has revealed that he has not given up on his dream of managing in the English top flight.
“Today in England, there are the best teams and the best football in the world,” the coach told Il Romanista.
“At the beginning of the season, I was very close to Tottenham, but that didn’t materialise, as well as with Newcastle.
“Let’s see in the future; I think it will happen.
“Everyone would love to work in England to experience the fantastic atmosphere there. It’s something you can’t find in another country.”
Fonseca has been out of work since his departure from Roma last summer.
Tottenham, Newcastle fare differently after Fonseca snub
After rejecting Fonseca, Spurs turned to former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
However, Fonseca’s fellow Portuguese did not fare well in north London. He lasted only 17 games, getting the sack in November.
Tottenham subsequently appointed Antonio Conte, who was a firm summer target alongside Fonseca and Nuno.
Newcastle eventually opted for Howe and he has steered them away – for now at least – of a relegation battle.
There is more work to do get over the line in that battle. But, they are in a much better position than they were after sacking Steve Bruce.
