Report: Man United & Chelsea eyeing star with £68m release clause

Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly both keen on a potential transfer move for Benfica centre-back Tomas Araujo.

Both clubs are in the market for new defensive additions, with Como star Jacobo Ramon another name of interest, as revealed on the Daily Briefing earlier today.

Araujo looks like another option who could be well worth exploring, with the Portugal international impressing for both club and country in recent times.

The 24-year-old has long been linked with Premier League clubs, and he’s only continued to develop and improve, making it into his country’s World Cup squad this summer.

According to TEAMtalk, he has a £68m release clause in his contract, with both Man Utd and Chelsea keen on a potential transfer.

Still, the TEAMtalk report suggests a January move is unlikely for Araujo, even if he is attracting interest.

Capable of playing centre-back or right-back, Araujo recently impressed United and Chelsea scouts in some big games, though perhaps they will continue to monitor him for a while longer before thinking about any offers or negotiations.

The report also names other clubs like Tottenham, Newcastle, and Brighton as potential suitors for Araujo, so this could end up being a pretty fierce battle for his signature.

Benfica will no doubt be keen to keep hold of Araujo, and it seems for now that they’re in a pretty strong position due to his release clause, which probably looks a bit high, even if he’s a fine player.

It’s surely more likely that interested clubs will wait until the summer to try to negotiate that price down.
