Two lucrative options step up as Man Utd outcast makes his long goodbye
Unwanted Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero will reportedly pick from two clubs as his free-transfer departure from Old Trafford draws ever closer.
Romero has fallen down the pecking order in recent years at United, much to his annoyance. He has pushed to leave in previous transfer windows – all to no avail. However, he will soon be free to leave with his contract at United expiring in six weeks.
Romero has been strongly linked with a return to his native Argentina, with Boca Juniors reportedly keen. However, they are yet to follow up on their initial interest and are still to make contact with his agent.
But Romero does have two options open to him this summer, as per Stretty News. In an exclusive, they claim both Everton and Juventus are the two clubs vying for his signature. They state the pair have both been in touch with his agent as they look to increase competition between the sticks.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side want an experienced custodian to keep Jordan Pickford on his toes. Robin Olsen has fulfilled that role this season. However, the Swede looks destined to return to Italy this summer at the end of his loan from Roma.
And Romero would be an ideal candidate to step into the breach.
It’s not the first time Everton have been linked with Romero either. They tried, unsuccessfully, to sign the Argentina stopper in summer 2020.
However, it could prove a case of second time lucky – if they can convince him to turn down Juventus.
The dethroned Italian champions are in the market for a new keeper themselves with veteran Gigi Buffon set to end his second spell in Turin. He has been tipped to join Barcelona, with their No 2 – Neto – an apparent target for Arsenal.
As per Stretty News, a move to Turin looks more likely for the 34-year-old. While he would have to up sticks, it would be a grand old challenge for the experienced keeper as he battles Wojciech Szczesny for the gloves at i bianconeri.

Solskjaer quiet on Europa League final keeper
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer meanwhile is giving nothing away over who will keep goal in the Europa League final.
United have been “flip-flopping” between David De Gea and Dean Henderson in recent weeks. However, it remains uncertain who will take the gloves against Villarreal in Gdansk next week.
Asked about the situation, Solskjaer reaffirmed his belief that talks with his players will remain private.
“Every time I try to explain to players why they aren’t playing… all those discussions remain private.
“David has been a top keeper and is still a top keeper.
“I’m very comfortable playing with David or Dean and I’m pleased that either of them are happy to be a sub.”
